University of Florida Gilkey Scholarship Program
Each year, Michael A. Gilkey, Inc. recognizes students who excel in the Landscape Architecture program at the University of Florida. The Gilkey Awards are presented in five categories. The Gilkey Pin-up Award recognizes the second-year undergraduate student with the best pin-up, or display of student work. The Gilkey Planting Design Award recognizes the best third-year undergraduate student planting design project. The remaining three awards are student professional awards, given to one third-year, one fourth-year, and one fifth-year student. These awards celebrate the character and dedication of these students who exhibit love of and commitment to the profession of landscape architecture.
E-Fest 2009
Michael A. Gilkey, Inc. was proud to join Josh Wynne Construction at the fourth annual E-fest, a Sarasota celebration of conscious living. Reflecting upon the principles of sustainability, the team designed table tents including individual packets of Coreopsis leavenworthii, or Tickseed, the Florida State Wildflower. These packets were given to guests at the festival. One side demonstrated how to grow the flowers (with a conceptual emphasis on their continuing cycle), and the other answered the question: Why hire a landscape architect for your sustainable design? Landscape architect Michael A. Gilkey, Jr. added native materials he used at the recently completed Codding Cottage to the display, including the innovative Coconut Mulch, native plants such as Duranta erecta and Muhlenbergia capillaris, and clay brick.
